Generally, this bug manifests when there is asymmetric latency (for example, where half of the DAG members have latency of 1 ms, while the other half of the DAG members have 30 ms latency) for two cluster nodes that discover a broken connection between the pair. If the first node detects a connection loss well before the second node, a race condition can occur:
- The first node will initiate a reconnect of the stream between the two nodes. This will cause the second node to add the new stream to its data.
- Adding the new stream tears down the old stream and sets its failure handler to ignore. In the failure case, the old stream is the failed stream that has not been detected yet.
- When the connection break is detected on the second node, the second node will initiate a reconnect sequence of its own. If the connection break is detected in the proper race window, the failed stream’s failure handler will be set to ignore, and the reconnect process will not initiate a reconnect. It will, however, issue a pause for the send queue, which stops messages from being sent between the nodes. When the messages are stopped, this prevents GUM from operating correctly and forces a cluster restart.
In addition to fixing the issue described above, KB2550886 also includes other important Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes that are also recommended for DAGs:
- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2549472 – Cluster node cannot rejoin the cluster after the node is restarted or removed from the cluster in Windows Server 2008 R2
- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2549448 – Cluster service still uses the default time-out value after you configure the regroup time-out setting in Windows Server 2008 R2
- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2552040 – A Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster loses quorum when an asymmetric communication fail

People tracking apps
I had a friend send me a location tracking request from Find My Friends for the iPhone. This app lets you see and optionally share you location with your friends in real-time.
I had already been using Google Latitude to do this with a couple of friends. These type of apps are good for tracking love ones and family in real time, if so choose to. Saves the call\txt of “Where are you at.”
After linking up with 3 people I can say Google Latitude is a bit better. Latitude lets you set how specific your location is shared on per friend basis: Exact, city level, manual, or not shared. Find My Friends only lets you add or remove friends, no per friend level sharing controls.
So if you want to hide location or trick people into thinking your somewhere else (manual location set) Latitude is the better app. The iOS 5 requirement is really the biggest issue. Latitude supports Droid, iPhone, BB, Nokia, and Windows Mobile.
I won’t be surprised if foursquare or Facebook at some point adds real-time location update support.
Feel free to send me a tracking request to either at izzy@altered.com
Warning: Don’t use either app if cheating 🙂

To resolve the problem open up the web.config file in the OWA, ECP, EWS, EAS, and Autodiscover folders.
Then remove the following line and save the files.
<remove name=”Profile <add name=”CasHealthModule” type=”Microsoft.Exchange.Common.ExWebHealthModule,Microsoft.Exchange.Common, ” />
Installing Exchange 2010 Rollup Updates
1) Download the latest RU
2) Exit all EMS & EMC sessions
3) Disable ForeFront for Exchange with the following command: fscutility /disable
This command will not be in the path by default, so goto ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Forefront Protection for Exchange Server>’ to run it
4) Remove any Interim Updates for Exchange (This is the step I missed that was causing Windows Update to fail to install the Rollup)
5) Install the RU
6) Re-enabled ForeFront: fscutility /enable
My 9/11/01 Memory
Timeline ET:
8:46 AA 11 hits WTC North Tower
9:03 UA 175 hits WTC South Tower
9:37 AA 77 hits Pentagon
9:59 South World Trade Center tower collapse
10:15 UA 93 crashes in Shanksville, PA
10:28 North World Trade Center tower collapse
I don’t recall what time I woke up this day but I know I was heading into the NetIQ office in Houston, TX early since we (Laura, Chrissy [my-Ex], and I) were working on hands on demo for trade show. So I was driving when the first plane hit WTC North at 7:46AM CT. A minor news report was made that a small plane hit the tower and nothing much was made of it. Then at 8:03AM, when I was just pulling into the parking lot the second plane hit. By this time there was a bit of chatting about if the first plane was a small or larger plane and how a pilot could hit the WTC tower on such a clear day.
When the second plane hit the tone quickly changed. I when into the office and into the game\TV room, which was setup to work on the hands on lab that day with my good friend Laura Bell. This room had a big screen TV and there were probably already 30 people in there watching CNN. This room quickly began to fill and all work started to come to a halt that day. The news was replying the limited footage they had at that time over and over and as they got new footage or interviews those were added to the stream. When the third plane hit the Pentagon at first I believe it was stated that a bomb had gone off there. This was still a very high state of confusion and disbelief, but by now it was clear these were no accidents.
Then the first town fell; now there were maybe 50+ people in the TV room and a few people were trying to go ahold of friends in family in the NYC area or who were traveling that day. At this time I was still traveling about 60% of the time and we had many co-workers around the world traveling this day. On of my co-workers had a brother who worked on the 110 floor in the WTC towers, he was trying to call all friends and family to see if anyone had spoken to his brother. But I don’t think anyone was getting through to NYC since phone lines were tied up or down.
The entire crowd was very quiet at this point and in a state of shock, some people were sitting on the couches and floors with a very blank look on their face. I don’t recall anyone crying or getting overly upset yet, just a state of shock. I don’t recall any news of the Shankville flight going town until a bit later. At 9:28 AM CT the second tower fell and it felt like the air in the room had been taken own and this force was pressing down on you. Most people were now in the TV room, maybe 150 people, and many were sitting on floor, leaning on the walls, and each other.
I don’t really recall much else from that day besides the endless news and replays of the towers being hit and falling. The next day we found out that my co-worker’s brother had stayed home that AM with the best migrate of his life.
I’ve tagged a few friends who shared this memory with me, I don’t really recall who all was in the room at NetIQ that day. If you were please comment on this post, even if you weren’t you are welcome to comment with your memory of the day.

Using Notes in Outlook and Exchange 2010 retention policies?
If your organization does, than it might run into an issue with Note items either disappearing or being moved to the archive mailbox of a user unexpectedly.
In order to see these issues a few Exchange 2010 pre-requisites must be setup:
1)Exchange 2010 SP1 must be in use
a) Functionality changed in SP1 so the Notes folder is now processed Messaging Records Management (MRM)
b) In RTM the Notes folder was not processed
2) Default Policy Tags (DPTs) or Retention Policy Tags (RPTs) must be in use
a) See Understanding Retention Tags and Retention Policies for more information on these
3) DPTs and\or RPTs must be included in a Retention Policy
4) Note items must meet the criteria of the DPT or RPTs
5) A Retention Policy, that includes the DPTs and\or RPTs must be applied to mailboxes
If the above pre-requisites are in place then items in the Notes folder can be deleted or moved to a user’s archive mailbox, depending if items meet the DPT and/or a RPT criteria.
To prevent DPTs from affecting Notes an Exchange administrator can create a policy tag that disabled the deletion action of Notes items. But as of this writing there is no administrator action that can prevent Notes from being archived if the RPTs are in use and Note items meet their criteria.
To prevent RTPs from being applied to Note items, end-users must apply the “Never” policy to the items or folders that contain them using OWA. This can’t be done in Outlook 2010.
For more information see the Prevent archiving of items in a default folder in Exchange 2010 EHLO blog post from 8/5/2011.
Finally there a bug in Outlook 2010 that prevents the opening of Note and others items from the search results against an archive mailbox. The hotfix in KB2544027, released 7/11/2011 for Outlook 2011, fixes this issue and related ones.
